Cicero and Clodia sketches by suburbanbeatnik Cicero and Clodia sketches by suburbanbeatnik
I'm going to scrap these soon, but I'm going to keep them in the gallery for a bit so people will have a chance to see them. Here are some sketches for Marcus Tullius Cicero and Clodia (or Claudia) Metelli, the protagonists of a novel I'm currently working on. One challenge in drawing someone as famous as Cicero was that even though there's a bunch of busts of him out there, none of them look exactly alike; also, all of them depict him in his fifties or sixties. Here, he's in his early forties. (I threw in a few chibi versions for the hell of it.) Clodia was a bit easier, since I could just make up what she looked like.

Him: "You can be sure I'm about to say something VERY scathing!"

Her: "Of course you are."

The original sketch can be found here. [link]

when you finish the story post up a link. There is so much awesome in this pairing that I have to read something on it. Being a Renaissance man (and thus in love with Cicero and antiquity) the idea of him and Clodia have something is just.....awesome..

Thanks for the enthusiasm! I really appreciate it. I started writing the story a year and a half ago, but it's so epic I kind of stalled... the amount of research and writing I would have to do is a bit mind-boggling. But I think it's a really cool idea, and I've never seen anything like it out there. I hope I can finish it someday.

Well I speak from experience when I say writing can be difficult and sometimes immense. So I completely understand your stalling. But you have some really excellent art, so you're doing awesome in that respect!

Thank you! BTW, if you're interested, I've published a few short stories in online 'zines. My story Ash-slave (a retelling of Cinderella set in ancient Persia) can be read here in the autumn issue of Dark Valentine magazine:

It's many years away from completion, though... unfortunately I work at a snail's pace. ;P Glad you like it, though!

Very beautiful! I just love the way you draw Clodia. You make her look so sensual and intelligent. Cicero is also very good. I know what you mean by the bust-problem, but you have nailed it again. I swear, no one does historical drawing quite like you. You are amazing!

Oh, excellent. :D Clodia looks either unconvinced or bored. Or both. :XD: The chibi Ciceros are hilarious. :giggle:

Thank you! I had a lot of fun doing the chibis. "Friends, Romans, countrymen, come listen to me. I'm ORATING!"

I think you did a good job figuring out Cicero--your interpretation does look like some of the busts out there. Particularly, I think you nailed his nose. Awesome.

Thank you! That means a lot to me. I was afraid my version of Cicero wouldn't look like Cicero. And that nose was hard!

I know what you mean about the busts! I had the same problem when looking for portraits of Saint-Just. Eventually I had to gather all the portraits and written descriptions (which bore at least SOME similarity to each other) and average out which portrait was most accurate.

Aha, sorry about that. Your sketches are very emotive. Even the chibis!

Yeah- it's funny. Portraits of Maxime tend to be very consistent, but SJ's portraits tend to shift along with his hair color.

Anyway, thanks! I'm glad you like the sketches. :)
