Gaston

Look, more Disney fanart! I've done Frollo--[link] -- and Hades -- [link] -- so here's everyone's favorite guy, Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast. It was an interesting challenge drawing this character realistically, because every screencap of him had him mugging more than Brian Blessed. DID SOMEBODY ORDER A LARGE HAM!?

But yes, I am pleased with the final result. I used to be a big fan of the movie, way back in the day, but I saw it so many times I grew irritated with it, and now I don't think I can ever watch it the same way again. I always thought making someone like Gaston the villain was really clever-- since Belle, who sits around reading romance novels, can't stand Gaston, who is exactly like the alpha asshole "heroes" of '70s and '80s bodice-rippers like The Wolf and the Dove. Sounds good in theory, but in practice I don't think it quite works, since it seems within the space of half an hour of film time Gaston goes from being a douchey sitcom-type antagonist to Evil Epic Villain. Personally, I think there's a bit of a disconnect there.

But as much of a douche as Gaston can be, he's a great character in the hands of the right author.
