Helene and Nikholaus by suburbanbeatnik Helene and Nikholaus by suburbanbeatnik
This is a commission I just finished for :iconrosengeist:, depicting her characters Helene d'Aulnoy and Nikholaus Eckhardt, two star-crossed lovers from her paranormal gothic comic "The Light-Eater."

It's set during the French Revolution-- Helene is a reactionary French baron's daughter with an interest in Rousseau, and Nikholaus is a somewhat stuffy German minor noble who comes to Versailles. He can also be seen here: [link]

Absolutely utterly delightful! I have been bewitched with that story, The Light Eater. The couple are so very darling.
Incredibly well depicted, she's incredibly beautiful and he's just astoundingly handsome. I'd shag him in an instant! LOL.
Oddly, reminds me of a historical figure whom I've been researching for a few years, he was Germanic, served in the French army and she was Swedish-French and part of a wealthy family in the fabric industry.
Just adore this. ::: applauds::: keep it up!

I'm glad you like it. :iconrosengeist: will be so happy to hear this!

Who's the historical guy you're researching?

Johann de Kalb. Long weird story how I became interested in him. But let's just say, he got my attention first in a very profound way.
This couple almost reminds me of de Kalb and his lovely wife. He's germanic, she is French. etc. :) I doubt their lives were bland or quiet. ;) Their story is so overshadowed by everyone else at the time, they barely have reached a spotlight. But I do know while he was in the Colonies during the American Revolution, he wrote his wife daily! For three years until he died at Camden, SC. That's devotion. He and his family were extraordinary.
Oh, H & N are such an amazingly lovely couple. :)

Lovely as ever. I want to use her decolletage as a pillow!

...That came out strange, but you know what I mean.

Beautiful expressions. =) Is that primer of some sort I see on the background? I never prime anything, so I'm clueless, but it gives a great texture.

That's matte medium. I use it to seal the original drawing, then I paint over it. I'm glad you like it! I like having organic textures in my artwork. :)

Ah, I see. I become more and more obsessed with texture, it's strange. I used to strive to rid my work of all texture, but now I want to add more and more. One hopes I'll stop at a happy medium, and not go too far the other way. =P

That's cool, though-- I'm so used to seeing a lot of really plastic digital art. I'm glad you're experimenting with texture-- that's surprisingly unusual!

Yes, I've moved away from wanting the really smooth plastic look; I think a lot of that is down to being able to control my media to get the textures I want, but I still have difficulty being really loose and gestural with anything other than plain pencil-and-paper. But I'm working on it! =D

Helene looks so simmilar to Rose Byrne as Mme. Polignac in Marie Antoinette, but he´s incredibly beautiful. I like her nose.

I guess she does look a bit like Rose Byrne, but actually I think she looks more like a cross between Molly Ringwald and Romola Garai.

You mean "she's incredibly beautiful," right? :)

Ha, ha, I am so immensely pleased by this.

"What is this you're reading, sir? Rousseau?"
"Bah, guh...uhm...Yes, he is one of the breast minds writing today...BEST! He's one of the best...Mein gott..."

I love this, you did both of them so well. The pink around his eyes particularly appeals to me. :)

Ha, ha, he's such a little doof. I heart my little German dork. Yes, we will be seeing him soon. You got to see the early script and just about right where it cut off is where he'll be coming back in...So, none of him for like 7 pages, and then he'll be coming back. :)
