Prince Hans

Description

Here's Prince Hans of the Southern Isles, from the new Disney blockbuster FROZEN. I am honestly not a huge fan of this movie-- you can read my review of it here. It had some good moments but it felt kind of weak overall, especially compared to TANGLED. The characters, IMO, were kind of bland, though they had potential.

SPOILERS BELOW.

Anyway, Hans here is the bad guy, and the idea of this doe-eyed pretty boy charmer being an ambitious, Machiavellian schemer is actually pretty cool, but the way it's carried out feels to me more like the scriptwriters reached the third act, realized, "hey, we need a bad guy!" and picked him at random. There's zero set-up to his eventual Face Heel Turn, which is too bad, because (at least in theory) it's an interesting idea.

I didn't care much for the character design overall, so it was a challenge to take Hans here and make him look like the guy he's supposed to be.  As I started drawing this, I realized that Hans, with his pointy nose, round puppy eyes and big chin, looks a LOT like a very young Blackadder/Jeeves & Wooster-era Hugh Laurie, which cracks me up. In this drawing, he's dressed a la Rupert Friend in THE YOUNG VICTORIA, with poofy late 1830s hair too, since the costumes of FROZEN seemed be basically early Victorian in style (so it's of the more consistent Disney movies when it comes to fashion, at least).

Anyway, I'm not sure if the end result is more 1830s Bertie Wooster, or Mr. Bingley as a Dickensian social climber, or some combination thereof.  It was fun to do, at least!

love the humanity you brought to his cartoonish face in the movie! It has a lot more depth to it!
