Rococo Belle by suburbanbeatnik Rococo Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Here's Belle, the winner of my "historically accurate Disney princess" poll! She's wearing a 1779-1780 robe de cour, based on one worn by Marie Josephine of Savoy. I left off the train, and gave her a softer 1780s English hairstyle, like what you'd see from a Gainsborough portrait, since that seemed more suitable to her character, and closer in feel to my previous 1780s Belle piece. [link]

It was a bit of a challenge coming up with a dress that was similar in feeling to the design in the original Beauty and the Beast, but I'm pleased with what I came up with. I know that ball gown was supposed to be gold, but it looks banana yellow. I prefer this style to what she wore in the film, but hey I've always been a big 18th century fan, if you couldn't tell...

In my Art history Class we briefly talked about this period. My teacher doesn't like it much, but I think it is more because it was harder to make out what was going on.

I kind of like the softness of the style. It's different from the Renaissance style and also Baroque. Is this more because of where the film was located? I heard Rococo was more in France though it was in others.

But she is very lovely. She actually has that softness, but yet she doesn't seem soft in actual sense. She looks like a curious girl, a girl that enjoys reading and seems strong somewhat. Wonderful.

I think you did a magnificent job! It is simply stunning ad I think it has more depth and character than the one she wore in the movie! I really enjoyed seeing this and it caused me to imagine what the movie would have been like if you had done the costume art for it. Thank you very much indeed for the pleasure of seeing this!

This dress is so.... entertaining. I love the dress, so colorful (personally, I like the banana yellow color) and eye-catching. I can't concentrate on one thing; I just want to sit and stare at the entire thing and sigh contentedly. I love all the detail you included, and the fact that it is Rococo automatically makes it awesome. The flowers are such a nice touch.

Thank you! Not all of my friends are crazy about this style, but I think it works for the character and the setting. :)

Especially for this time period, it's perfect. Yes, it is not the original, and perhaps this style is a little over the top, but that is what makes it so much better :-D

Excellent! I think this film probably helped get em addicted to the 18th Century! LOL
I wondered how accurate that ball gown is. I found an article Once upon a time, where it mentioned that the film takes place in the 1760's. Would this dress (or the film's) have been accurate? I don't think the film was, but that doesn't stop me from liking it nonetheless. haha

Well, there's an alternate opening where it's given a more concrete 18th century setting-- you can see it here. [link] It's hard to tell exactly what decade it's supposed to be, but it seems mostly late 1770s to the early 1780s, judging by the gowns and hairstyles.

They got away from that in the final movie, and Belle's dress looks mostly 1850s-ish. But I figured it would be truest to her character to keep to the original concept and keep her late 18th century.

Yeah I would agree with the 1850's, maybe late 1830's especially if you take into account the style of the Library dress, which to me, suggests late 1820's or 1830s
It is now official I MUST find the Diamond Edition of BatB! LOL
