Belle by suburbanbeatnik Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Look, more Beauty and the Beast fanart for Valentine's Day!

I decided that Gaston-- [link] -- needed a companion piece. So I drew Belle. I couldn't stand the idea of drawing her in her generic peasant outfit and ponytail, so I put her in a simple but fashionable robe a l'anglaise from the late 1770s or early '80s. Her hair is loose and flowing, like the Gainsborough portrait of the Linley sisters. [link]

Belle definitely seems to fit into the 1780s, I think. I can just see her in some small village in Poitou or elsewhere, sitting under a tree, reading Rousseau's Julie and sighing over the love of Julie and Saint-Preux. And then Gaston would come and annoy her. I am sure he would make plenty of disparaging remarks about Rousseau and other such wild, radical authors, while eying her bosom.

UPDATE: Here's a painting of Belle in another 1780s dress-- a rococo version of the famous yellow ballgown. [link]

I love her look and her hair. You've got a very dynamic line.
What kind of tool did you use ?

Actually I've seen a lot of concept art with this movie and this actually fits in well with quite a few of the pieces. Ahaa. Once again very unique but stil recognizable as Belle :3

Oh yeah? That's interesting. I often prefer Disney concept art to their finished designs, honestly.

I think she looks just like her animated counterpart, and so does Gaston! lol

This is gorgeous! The sketchy feeling, the lose and flowing lines, her expression, her dress, the way it all fits in with a real time period...

Perfect!

Hehe, especially her expression. Makes it a perfect companion piece to gaston, because this would be her reaction to his smug look :D

Yes, that's just what I had in mind. I can just see her saying, "Oh, Gaston..." with an exasperated sigh. :)

I never really got what era Disney was aiming at with the costumes in BatB (they normally seem to base it, albeit highly inaccurately, on something). She looks much better in a proper dress :D

And I think you're right that the 1780s would fit Belle well, what with revolution of society and the mind being in the air :) She reminds me of Disney-fied Madeleine from Quills for some reason!

Yeah, BatB is set in fantasy 18th-19th century Europe, there's no other way to describe it. I shudder to imagine what a fantasy version of 20th-21st America would look like... ;P

Indeed. Each time I visit the National Gallery of Art, I make a beeline for his paintings of Mrs. Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Mrs. Graham, then just stand there and drool over his brush-strokes.

They have a bunch of Gainsboroughs at the Frick here in NYC. And back where I used to live, in Pasadena, at the Huntington. His brushwork is amazing!

I've never been to the National Gallery. I'd so love to go. :)

Well, if I colored it it might help... I probably won't have time though. But I'm glad you like it-- I personally think she's better dressed here than in the movie. :)
