Belle by suburbanbeatnik Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Look, more Beauty and the Beast fanart for Valentine's Day!

I decided that Gaston-- [link] -- needed a companion piece. So I drew Belle. I couldn't stand the idea of drawing her in her generic peasant outfit and ponytail, so I put her in a simple but fashionable robe a l'anglaise from the late 1770s or early '80s. Her hair is loose and flowing, like the Gainsborough portrait of the Linley sisters. [link]

Belle definitely seems to fit into the 1780s, I think. I can just see her in some small village in Poitou or elsewhere, sitting under a tree, reading Rousseau's Julie and sighing over the love of Julie and Saint-Preux. And then Gaston would come and annoy her. I am sure he would make plenty of disparaging remarks about Rousseau and other such wild, radical authors, while eying her bosom.

UPDATE: Here's a painting of Belle in another 1780s dress-- a rococo version of the famous yellow ballgown. [link]

Sure-- I made the offer while the sale was still on, so it's still good. And yes, it is the original!

I do ship to the UK, though I'd have to ask for a bit more for shipping and handling. Would that be ok?

How quickly would you like the picture to get there? Mailing costs are pretty cheap through the USPS when you're sending certified mail-- but it's very slow. International priority is much quicker, but it's $14. What would you like?

And yes, I do take Paypal. :)

They're both USPS. USPS Certified Mail, or USPS International Priority?

I completely agree with you, Belle suits that era remarkably...isn't that when B&TB was set? or was it earlier 17th century? Regardless, I feel like this is reminiscent of the Broadway play...her peasant outfit was tweaked to come a lil off the shoulders. I love her hair & expression and the entire sketchy feel. LOVELY!

It wasn't really set in any particular era-- originally it was set more specifically in the later 18th century, but then it was changed so it was kind of a mix of the 18th-19th centuries.

Thanks-- I'm glad you like! :)

Beautiful. I love her expression, as if Gaston had indeed just made a particularly stupid remark about her current read.
