'Black Book' sketch by suburbanbeatnik 'Black Book' sketch by suburbanbeatnik
I just saw Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book" (Zwartboek) the other night, and I was blown away. It's an exciting and moving WW2 drama set towards the end of the war where the heroine, Rachel Stein aka Ellis de Vries (played by Carice van Houten) a Jewish cabaret singer working for the Dutch resistance, falls in love with Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch), with the Gestapo commandante she's spying on. There's crosses and double-crosses and plenty of action and nail-biting suspense, as Rachel discovers that no one is as they seem, even among her fellow Resistance workers. Don't take my word for it- go see it! This is easily the best movie Verhoeven has done in the past 20 years.

Van Houten and Koch are fantastic in their roles, and ooze old Hollywood glamor and charisma. I was so impressed that I had to draw them, in an 1940s movie poster sort of pose, with Rachel all dolled up and Müntze brandishing a Luger. I'd like to paint this when I get the chance.

I'd forgot to say it but still, I love this sketch. You should really consider painting it. I've seen your other works as well and they're all amazing.

I myself can't get enough of that movie. It's basically everything a movie should be and the acting is just superb.

I just watched it again recently, and it's fabulous! Can you believe the DVD is already out of print? Ugh!

Yay for hot Nazis, indeed!

You just keep on surprising and delighting me all the time, Joanne. You sure know how to make drawing both passionate and dramatic and your keen eye for detail never falter - especially your knowledge of costuming is impressive and a joy to watch.

I'm so glad that you have made a drawing of these two characters. I loved the movie. I have a fondness for these type of movies, actually! And then I also love World War II history - especially the many wonderful uniforms and the sparkling clothes the women wore around that time (both the 30's and the 40's).

I really hope you will be able to paint it one of these days!

It was pretty awesome, wasn't it? I saw it in the theaters twice. The two leads were incredibly hot, and had such chemistry. I've recommended this movie to everyone I know, and everyone I know has enjoyed it.

I would like to paint it, but first I need to get it on DVD. And I have a zillion other things to do. *sighs*

But I'm glad you like the drawing!

Yes, it was awesome! I loved every minute of it! I think I watched it a couple of times in the theater. I agree, they sure had chemistry. They were amazing!

I know all about having a lot to do. But the best thing about drawings is that they don't run away. It will still be there when you get the time to colour it!

Oh, yes, I LOVE it! You are very good at drawing uniforms!

Speaking of which, what did you think of my uniforms in the "Honey Cake" cover?

They were pretty awesome! They were very accurate and I especially love the helmets. I have always loved the german uniforms from World War II - especially the SS uniforms.

I must say that you are also very good at drawing weapons!

Yes, the Nazis were evil fuckers but they had amazing clothes designers and tailors!

Thanks- I tried to make the gun look good. I have lots of ex-military in my family and I knew I'd get crap from them if I didn't turn in a decent looking weapon. I don't suppose well-drawn guns are common on the covers of childrens' books? :P

You are right. They were evil fuckers many of them, but there were also some who were a little different. I guess war brings out the worst in people!

The gun looks very good! No, guns are probably not very common in children books!

I wanted to have the Germans smoking but I was told it was inappropriate for a children's book. I had a good laugh about that. But... they're the bad guys...

Damnation, we were meant to go and see this as well. In the end we did something else. Can't believe I missed hot guys in Gestapo uniform...

It is a problem of mine. :P Anyway, at least I get to see your representation! :)

Verhoeven movie? Without Rutger Hauer? Oh my! *lol*

Great sketch -- both in drawing and narrative point. Raises one's curious interest.

Thank you. I am really looking forward to painting it, as soon as I get home from New York, where I am right now. (I just got back from a delicious dinner at Sriphaphai in Queens, which has some of the most delicious and authentic Thai food I've ever had. If you like SE Asian food, you should definitely go there- it's even worth the trip up to Queens!)

Lugers are cool guns. They automatically take any picture from zero to Nazi in a few strokes of the pen.

The only question I would have is what is threatening this intrepid duo of star-crossed lovers?

Looking forward to seeing that movie... eventually. :)
