Carey Dashwood and Esther Pole by suburbanbeatnik Carey Dashwood and Esther Pole by suburbanbeatnik
This is several character studies I did- in color!- for a story set in Revolutionary War era Philadelphia that I have since abandoned. The redheaded redcoat is one Captain Carey Dashwood, a Major Andre type, artistic, playful and sophisticated; the serious looking young lady is Esther Pole, a Patriot idealist who is using her wealthy Tory uncle's connections to spy on people like Captain Dashwood.

2/25/07 Update: I changed the file to a higher-res version so more detail can be seen. Enjoy, everyone!

Faving because this reminds me of one of my own stories! :D I love how you drew Esther, but Carey's even more wonderful! ;P

What medium did you use for these?

It's still in the early planning stages, so I'm not even entirely sure where it's going to go at this point, as sad as that sounds!

The Revolutionary War is my favorite period, I admit. Though my heart beats to the tune of a blue coat more than a red one. ;)

They're very cute. :) I admit I don't know half as much as I would like to about the Revolution, particularly on the Tory side...Actually, I think Peggy Shippen was in a Benedict Arnold book I read--she was only in for one scene, if I recall correctly, but I remember liking her a lot for all that.

"Cross between Hitler and Paris Hilton" made me chuckle.

Y'know what's really funny? I had an idea similar to yours...(and i thought i was being 'original';) the core of it is, anyway..

Well, i love the plot and the drawings even more. Wish i could draw people like you! ^^

Well, if you're talking about who I think you're talking about, I think her stuff is well done, but I personally am not the biggest fan of anthro art. I can only do it once in a blue moon... ;P

Amusingly enough, my agent wants me to turn the Bunnie Antoinette piece into a picture book of anthro bunny queens through history. You heard it here first! I hope it gets picked up by someone, but I also hope I don't get sick of the whole idea when I'm right in the middle of it...

Hi, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Carey Dashwood reminds me of my main character, Admiral Frederick Alexius - Dashwood's expression is one I imagine that Alexius would wear, and Dashwood also looks quite aristocratic and wise, yet...paternal? Maybe this is just my interpretation of your drawing and connecting it with my character, so feel free to correct me!

Oh, I'd love to try them! Are they very difficult? I was just on a trip and I got to see oil paintings from the seventeenth century and they were astounding.

It takes a lot of work, and a lot of space- most people use a seperate studio, but I just don't have that luxury. I took enough oil painting classes that I began to feel like I almost knew what I was doing; but since there's a lot of fumes and toxicity involved, I didn't feel like continuing. Ah well...

Mmmmmmmm fumes... On the other hand, they could be a good thing. Chemically induced creativity in your art. Like The Beatles.

Hi Joanne,

Wonderful image. The faces are so intelligent and real. Dashwood looks like he contemplating his next move to check the rebels. I agree that Esther too looks lovely despite the scowl. Excellent period costumes - Dashwood looks wuite the British officer.

Best regards,
Axel
