Chantal's Got a Gun by suburbanbeatnik Chantal's Got a Gun by suburbanbeatnik
Here's another painting from the vaults. This started out as kind of a joke, actually- the teacher of this entertainment class I was taking at the time told us, "By all means, do NOT paint a picture of a girl with a gun!" So, of course, I had to figure out how to paint a girl with a gun, in a way that was distinctive. So, I used one of my many characters- Chantal Verger de Lambermont- dressed her in high 1830s fashion, gave her a period pistol, and flanked her with admiring dandies. I also tried painting her face like a 1940s pin-up, a la Varga or Gil Elvgren, with full-on lipstick, blush and plucked eyebrows.

She looks like a cupcake.
A cupcake packing heat. And...a skull necklace?
Which is pretty awesome in my book.

One of my favourite parts in this is actually the hair on Dandy #1.

Glad you like all the 1830s frilliness, and the absurd hairdos. Have you ever seen the mini "Wives and Daughters"? The 1830s costumes and hair are amazing in that.

cool. if you did not look at the bottom, one would only assume she was simply angry, but when you look at the bottom, she has a weapon.......o.0

How clever, my dear.
A woman's scorned look is often weapon enough but just in case it is not... bring out the pistol. lol

Great piece. =D

There are far too many beautiful things to point out on this one - I'll just say the scroll/deco-smoke on the bottom (spouting from her pistol) is just bloody brilliant - and her facial expression made me smile :D

bravo!

I love your painting technique, I thought this was done with coloured pencils, you create some fabulous textures! Great poses and expressions, and the dress is fantastic! As much as I hate the blue for boys, pink for girls thing, it works really well here, it makes the image really eye-catching. Congratulations on the well-deserved DD!

Thanks so much! I had a lot of fun doing the over-the-top 1830's gown, with the big poofy sleeves and the loop-di-do Apollo knot hairstyle. Of course, with a style that aggressively girly, I couldn't see it any other color than pink! ;P
