Esbjorn and Nanyamka by suburbanbeatnik Esbjorn and Nanyamka by suburbanbeatnik
This is a commission for :iconyeahgirl11:-- it features her two characters, Esbjorn, an anthropologist's son, and Nanyamka, a girl from a Yoruba-like tribe in West Africa. They're depicted at Esbjorn's father's library in Northern Europe; Esbjorn is teaching his friend how to read. I wanted to create a very serene picture, with an emphasis on these two people from disparate backgrounds peacefully enjoying each other's company.

I used my old Prismacolor pencils that I got as a birthday present way back in '93, and some xylene blending markers. I don't know how Yvonne Gilbert does it-- colored pencils are hard!

I love the vibrancy of the colours, especially that gorgeous sky – and you seem to be coping all right with the coloured pencils, however hard you may be finding them. =D They do require a lot of layering; I tend to lay down flatish base colours in watercolour before I start, which cuts out a bit of the layering, because there is then no white paper to show through. =P

Wow, that is actually a great idea. I wonder why that never occurred to me before...

Thanks! :D

I think I'm essentially a mixed-media girl. =P I was driven mad at uni when we were only allowed to use one medium, when mixing a few together would make things so much easier (and I'm all for easy =P) Plus I hurt my wrist a few years ago and it's still not marvelous, so I'm always on the lookout for ways to ease what I do with it, and therefore get much more drawing time. =D

I just did a picture with ink, gouache, marker and colored pencils-- it's the most mixed media piece I did in a long time. And it was so much quicker than painting everything with acrylics! I need to do this more often. :D

I'm a slow worker, so I'm all for things that quicken the process. =P
Did the image come out well? Do we get to see it?

Yes it did turn out well-- but I don't want to post it on my page until it's published (it's coming out in an online magazine next month). It's for a story about Cleopatra, which is pretty cool. :)

Thanks! It took a few days to do the colors. I keep forgetting how much you have to layer colored pencils to make sure they look right. :)
