Hammer and Sickle by suburbanbeatnik Hammer and Sickle by suburbanbeatnik
This was the cover I did for Issue #8 of Astonishing Adventures Magazine, our special anniversary double issue. It depicts Russian superagents Hammer and Sickle fighting the Nazi menace. They're from Chris Dabnor's short story, "The Fox Meets the Bear," which is super pulpy WW2 fun. Visually, I was inspired by both Inglorious Basterds and Team Fortress 2, in addition to all those 1950s men's magazines. As you might have already guessed, Sickle is the lithe athletic blond with the knives; Hammer is the big guy.

You can read Chris' story and see my artwork in AAM #8.
It's now available at Mediafire- [link] - and issuu. [link]

You can also see artwork by :iconelenatria: and :icontemiel:. It was a lot of fun working with them on the magazine!

Did you do all this in colored pencil or something? :o Because I don't know how you had the patience for that. :XD:

No, I did it in acrylic on Holbein paper! I'm pretty patient with paintings though, not with much else. :)

Acrylic was my next guess.:XD:
Haha, you're telling me that your colored pencil works don't take a lot of patience? lol

This is such a clever idea, the hammer and the sickle being the basis for the Russian super agents. I love the way you catpured their characteristics in their appearance. AWESOME!

Yes I have, Fox is such a like-able character and Sickle brings in wonderful elements of raw brutality. Hammer is hilarious too.

I am glad, they are good characters and work well in the story. I would love to hear more of them if he is planning another story.

Awesome! Well, Chris just let me know he's busy right now, but he is considering a Fox/Bear sequel. You should tweet him at @dabnorfish and let him know what you think! :)

Thanks! It was a lot of fun to do. I love Chris' visuals-- and the idea of Hammer and Sickle as Soviet superagents is just too awesome!
