Intergalactic Romance by suburbanbeatnik Intergalactic Romance by suburbanbeatnik
I've been on a Star Wars kick lately- mainly reading up about the Imperials, who have cool, if very difficult to draw, uniforms. Anyway, the awesome art of Davide Fabbri, who illustrated Dark Horse's "Empire: The Wrong Side of the War" (which features a hot little subplot about imperial Captain Kale Roshuir and his rebel sweetie Deena Shan) inspired this. The looks of the Captain and his girlfriend were right out of a romance pulp magazine from the '30s and '40s- and thus the idea for this was born.

I painted Roshuir and Deena with acrylics on Holbein paper. The hand lettering was done with Copics and technical pens.

This might possibly be the silliest thing I have ever done. But I wish this magazine existed, because I would SO read it.

Oh man, I can imagine. Those damn jodhpurs, and that tunic with the funky closures and the pocket thingies! The design is simple but really sophisticated- and like all simple and sophisticated designs, I bet it's a bitch to make.

This magazine would be a hot seller in the GFFA, don't you think? ;P

You mean "Empire: Wrong side of the War," right? Because "Intergalactic Romance" is just a figment of my imagination. :D

Love this! If you're going for a 30's pulp fiction look you might consider one of those slightly pastel or rich muddled colors for the BG. It's very nice and I would love to see this kind of story, in this kind of style, done in a graphic novel.

Well, art wise, for this pic I was also really influenced by the nurse romances that came out in the '60s. Glad you like it though! I wish that the Roshuir/Shan storyline had been more developed- I'd never seen that kind of thing in the Star Wars EU before, and it would have been cool to see a whole issue dedicated to this attractively ill-fated couple.

I have another story you could've but on the cover, "Three Days and Four Nights in Jabba's Tent" :rofl:

This is great. I always loved the imperial uniforms because... they... remind me of (intentionally) German uniforms in WWII and... well, ^^; See, I really love German WWI uniforms.

:paranoid: Is the FBI going to come after me now. :paranoid:

"Three days and four nights"! That's so awesome. I shoulda used that one. Maybe next time... ;P

Hey, don't worry! I love German WW2 uniforms too. They were really well designed, and very flattering. John Mollo, when he designed the uniforms in Star Wars, really knew what he was doing. (It's no coincidence he's an expert in military costume and history- you should check out his book about Revolutionary War uniforms! [link] )

Have you seen the BBC miniseries "Island at War," or Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book"? Those are a couple of well done and very romantic films focusing on the German occupation. I think you might really like them! :)

I added it to my amazon.com wishlist! ^^;

Neither seen either of those BBC Miniseries. Will go check now if my library has them... yeah, my first story was supposed to be a WWII story. Somehow The Dreamer happened instead! C'est la Vie! ha ha. I didn't even *like* the American Revolution when this all started...! ^^;

Well, Black Book is Paul Verhoeven's last movie, and Island at War is the miniseries.

Yeah, I too have had a subject hijack me... ;P

Thanks! He's all so manly and intense, and she... looks just like Olivia Newton-John. "Let's get physical, Captain Roshuir!"
