Mary, Bloody Mary by suburbanbeatnik Mary, Bloody Mary by suburbanbeatnik
I did this for :iconladypakter4life:, and because I thought Mary Tudor needed a picture where she was young and cute, as opposed to where she's the usual stereotypical heavy. It's loosely inspired by the Carolyn Meyer novel, "Mary, Bloody Mary," the first book in the Young Royals series.

Basically I had this image in my head, and I had to get it down in paint before I lost interest in doing it. Mary's here, about 15 or so, dressed in a relatively simple red court gown and with her hair loose, because she's getting ready for bed. (This probably also explains the somewhat unusual display of cleavage, since I figured the maid would have helped loosen the top of the lacing on her bodice.) But her prayers have been interrupted by... just who? I have a pretty good idea of just who it might be, but I leave it to you to decide, dear reader.

Edit: I made the outlines of the shadow stronger and darker when someone pointed out it wasn't clear it was an intruder. Hope it looks better now, guys!

Okay,I know you aimed for cute but somehow I still think she looks vicious and evil. Or atleast very maniputive and bratty type of kid who would treat her siblings like rubbish.

But still it is a very, very beautiful picture and my guess is that her sister entered attempting to assassinate her so she could have the throne xD

Well, you've got to keep in mind that she's reacting to the entrance of a guy who's made her life hell, and probably molested her too.

Aha I see, I didn't think of that but when I re-think it it really suits the picture now that I know what you really where aiming for ^^

I love this so much! I wish i could get a print of it! I am a fan of Mary, which is pretty rare, so you don't see alot of flattering pics of her. Will you be making prints?

The dress and the picture in general looks very much like one Elizabeth has been painted in. [link]

The dress is similar, but the picture itself...? Elizabeth isn't standing in a stone room being menaced by an ominous shadow. I actually borrowed the pose from a John Williams Waterhouse drawing, and the color scheme from a Sanjulian pic.

True True. I was just struck by how much this reminded me of Elizabeth(if you minus the crosses of course lol). I am currently working on my thesis on Elizabeth, so I see her everywhere!

Heehee, okay! Well, Lizzie and Mary certainly had similar life experiences when they were teenagers. It must come of being the daughters of an insecure tyrannical half-Welshman. ;P

*Hopes the person who interrupted Mary's prayers won't be on the receiving end of a Royal tongue lashing* This is wonderful work. Will you do others based on the Young Royals?

Thank you! I actually sent an email to Carolyn Meyer to come look at the painting and all her fans' comments here, but I haven't heard back from her yet.

Completely awesome. Girl was a spitefire (repeatedly standing up to her father, and being the only steadfast Catholic in an ever-changing court of faith, hello), and you captured it perfectly :D

I've just been reading the Philippa Gregory novels and in that same line of thought (being sympathetic towards some of the more maligned female characters of history) I think your picture is brilliant. You did a great job making her young and beautiful while still showing the Tudor temper and traces of her older self in her face. brava!

Oh, there's plenty of novels about Tudor England, just precious few that are any good... and not very many about Mary Tudor either. I'd say "Mary, Bloody Mary" is probably one of the best (if not the best) books set during this time ("The Perilous Gard" is also very good, although it's more of a fantasy than a straight historical).

That's a big question. There's lots of websites out there... just go to wikipedia and look for something about Tudor England that specifically interests you, whether it's social history or biographies. [link]

I've read a lot about her, and have to say that I am shocked at the way she was treated. I don't think she was bloody, just abused and misunderstood.

I love the colors. I think it looks just like her when she was a teenager. However, there aren;t many pictures of her as a teenager. But it does look like her in my opinion.

How much do you want to bet that Mary would have been less "bloody" if someone had just taken the time to give her a hug?

Her fierce expression is great, and I love the way she's clutching that rosary like it's some kind of weapon! The color of her gown is so rich, especially set against the grays of the stone background, it heightens the almost manic energy she emits. Great work!

Mary, Bloody Mary is the best book in this series, i also love the reason that you painted this because I believe she is (for the most part) grossly misrepresented.
