Rococo Belle by suburbanbeatnik Rococo Belle by suburbanbeatnik
Here's Belle, the winner of my "historically accurate Disney princess" poll! She's wearing a 1779-1780 robe de cour, based on one worn by Marie Josephine of Savoy. I left off the train, and gave her a softer 1780s English hairstyle, like what you'd see from a Gainsborough portrait, since that seemed more suitable to her character, and closer in feel to my previous 1780s Belle piece. It was a bit of a challenge coming up with a dress that was similar in feeling to the design in the original Beauty and the Beast, but I'm pleased with what I came up with. I know that ball gown was supposed to be gold, but it looks banana yellow. I prefer this style to what she wore in the film, but hey I've always been a big 18th century fan, if you couldn't tell...

Thanks! I'm glad you like it, it was fun to do. :)

Have you ever done your own (human) version of Belle? I was looking at your Disney fanart, and you have some nice pieces there!

You're welcome ^__^

Thank you very much! I enjoy drawing the Disney gals. I have not yet done my own human version of Belle, but I'd like to, someday. If I ever find the right photo reference...

Oh, I love how you did her features. What a great transition from cartoon to more illustrative and realistic. :) Beautious!

AHHHHH I love!! The 18th century is the best century for clothes. Let's just say I'm super excited for that time period in the vampire storyline, doot doot dooo.... :boogie: I really like the softer hair. I think it works perfectly for Belle as a character and for the design with this dress; the French styles of the time were so sculpted. And huge. :XD: I've always thought the gold dress from the movie was a tad overrated. Just a little bit of some other color would've added some much-needed visual interest, which this has in spades. ;)

Why thank you! The 18th century is certainly THE decade for costume porn, isn't it? I was really excited to find the fashion plate this dress is based on-- it not only was yellow, but it had the bell shape, the off the shoulder sleeves, and the looped-up drapes in front. It's like it was the dress Belle was born to wear. :D

BTW, what do you think of the way I painted her face?

I really like the face! The skin has a great soft look to it, and her expression is so refined. And yet, it still looks like her Disney self, I would've recognized her even without the title. ;) The eyebrows, I think, are particularly nice, they have a great gentle arch to them.

Oh thank you! My original Belle drawing looked about 20... and Belle in this painting looks about 18, which is slightly annoying to me. But she's a lot happier in this pic, which I think youthens her a bit. I'm glad you think she looks like her Disney self. That makes me happy. :tighthug:

I think one reason I think of Belle's dress as banana yellow is because that's how it's depicted in all the Princess merchandise... oy!

Thanks, I'm glad you like the face!

Wow, you did an amazing job on that dress! So much detail. The bodice is especially amazing. The hair looks great too.

The only thing is that she looks very young... almost like a child. Was that on purpose?

Thanks-- the dress was really fun to paint. I don't think I've ever painted something his complicated so quickly.

As for Belle's youthful appearance, I'm not quite sure how that happened. Maybe her easy and carefree existence at the Beast's palace made her look like a teenager again, LOL!
