Description

Kathleen Duey, a friend of mine, recently requested a drawing of Sadima, the heroine of her excellent fantasy novel, "A Resurrection of Magic: Skin Hunger." I obliged her, and had lots of fun doing it. I highly recommend this book, it's just awesome! [link]

Kathleen has also posted this sketch on her blog: [link]

Sadima is a farm girl turned magician's housekeeper and secretary, struggling with day to day life under an oppressive monarchy, so it was an interesting challenge coming up with a costume that was appopriate, fit the culture of the book, and was a believable mish-mash of periods. The bodice and skirt has a roughly Tudor/Stuart working class look, with a neckline that combines elements of the Queen Anne and mandarin designs. Her belt and purse are 14th century, and her shoes are roughly late 1600s.

As for the sketch, I wanted something painterly, but didn't feel like breaking out my paints. So I used Prismacolor colored pencils, with Prismacolor alcohol markers. I'm not crazy about Prismacolor markers, but it turned out pretty well, all things considering.
