Saint-Just by suburbanbeatnik Saint-Just by suburbanbeatnik
I did this years ago, but only about 6 months ago did I yank it out of my portfolio. It's partially a tribute to Riyoko Ikeda, creator and artist behind the monumental anime/manga Rose of Versailles; but it's also a tribute to French revolution fangirls everywhere, and to their love of all those beautiful long-haired revolutionaries like Louis Antoine Saint-Just who cherished flowers and frou along with Rousseau and regicide.

GAH! Amazing! I have recently become a rabid Saint-Just fangirl (As I am already a French Revolution maniac! ^-^), and I loved your bunny Marie Antoinette and Madame du Barry, but this takes the cake! J'adore, J'adore, J' adore!!!

Ah, alas, my Saint-Just fanart can't hold a candle to most of the stuff here on DA...

Wow! I can't believe I didn't comment on this one :D I don't watch anime, but I'd call myself a Saint-Just fan. Is there, um, any chance for you to draw him in non-anime version? :D Love the colors here, by the way.

I do not know the character (or more than a snippet about the historical figure), but this is my favourite of all in your gallery, I think.

I love the classical beauty, which is centred in his smooth Grecian nose and rounded lips; and the sort of discontented but aspiring tension in his eyebrows. He is beautiful and intellectually ascetic.

It's a kind of icon; themed, with a contrived & idealized posture and a designed border. I like iconographic portraits like that. Also, you use the (pencil crayons?) very well to render depth & texture with a cool, soothing colour scheme that suits the element of air and the season of spring.

It also makes me think of somebody I love.

First prize.

I find it endearing that you find so much meaning in what's basically "Rose of Versailles" fanart. One of my friends at school at the time shuddered at what he called the bubblegum pastel palette.

I still like it, though. Thanks for the prize! ;P

I really like this! It's beautiful. And what I like the most is the fact that even though it's a tribute to an anime/manga you've used a different style. Very good!

Yes, Ryoko is an amazing artist. (I've collected a lot of her books from Ebay- they have a lot of her art books in Italy, strangely enough. I never get tired of looking at her work!) And thanks also for the fav! :D
