The Warlord's Captive Bride by suburbanbeatnik The Warlord's Captive Bride by suburbanbeatnik
Another romance novel commission, for a story called "The Warlord's Captive Bride." The hero is a Norman warlord, and the heroine is a Saxon lady, both wed in a marriage of convenience, after the rise of William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings in the 11th century. It's a fun, sexy story, and the clients loved it, I'm happy to say.

So yeah, I was going for Classic 1980s Romance Novel Cover here, complete with clinch, brooding hero and blonde heroine with lots of hair (but with a teensy bit more historical accuracy than the usual paintings one saw in the '80s). Also, the random flowers! You cannot forget the random flowers.

Please accept my particular compliments - this image is lush enough for an MGM Classic!Clap

Thank you! Again, this is for a story similar in some respects to Kathleen Woodiwiss's "The Wolf and the Dove," a classic romance, but with a much greater degree of historicity. (A lot of older romance covers are great paintings, but the attempts at medieval clothing and architecture are pretty cringey.)

Which is, in some ways, all part of the fun (although one prefers a strong element of Fact to help ground the more daring flights of fiction).:D (Big Grin)

This is so much fun! It makes me want to do a bunch of romance novel inspired illustrations. I particularly appreciate the random flowers :D

Thank you! This is possibly one of my favorite paintings ever. I love old school (1970s-1980s) romance covers sooooo much.

Oh mi gosh, it remind me about a Kathleen E. Woodiwiss's 1983 story called "The Wolf and the Dove". I loved it! And your style fit perfectly with this tipe of novel. *Free Icon/Emote* Molang (I Love It!)

It's very Wolf and the Dove-y. The story that this illustrates is a great blend of Rosemary Sutcliffe and Kathleen Woodiwiss (bodice ripping, but with better prose and research, IMO). I'm really excited for the author to finish it! :)
